Valentine’s Day is one of those events that splits offices, homes, and even relationships right down the middle. For everyone who says “it’s just another day invented for someone to sell cards on” and “who cares if I have a date/if my girlfriend expects a Valentine’s card/if this is the death knell of our relationship”, there’s someone else crying in front of a mirror or having their belongings thrown at them as they are told to “get out – and I always hated your friends, too!”
Whichever side of the fence you sit on, it’s always a safer bet to actually get a Valentine’s Day card than to try and make a statement. After all, if you think Valentine’s is stupid and pointless, shelling out £5 for a card isn’t going to change that. But it will save you a lot of trouble if your partner doesn’t agree.
You might want to avoid feeling like too much of a dupe by steering clear of the typical tear-jerker motifs like roses, teddy bears, and fluffy kittens. Also, opting for colours other than red and pink is good way of marking yourself as more than just your average victim of the Americanised “holiday event” industry: and luckily, this year is seeing a huge amount of alternative Valentine’s day design.
There’s lots dull pastel shades with a home-made look, as well as colours like bright green and yellow (typical for jealousy more than love!) with a simple, even Spartan look. Why not let yourself be inspired by our selection and make your own card? That way, you’re putting your stamp on it and can even have fun. Done with a touch of humour (I mean: “Whale you be my Valentine” – that’s so bad it’s good), creative cards for your loved one this 14th February are bound to bring a smile – and maybe even a kiss – to both your lips.
