Are you promoting a sporting event? Or maybe its classes or training sessions? Whatever the case, if you need to design a sports flyer, you’ll soon realise that it’s not quite as easy as it might seem. “Ah, you think, I’ll just put a photo of the last match in the middle and then…”
But good sports photography is, of course, hard to find: and photographs of sporting events that work in the context of a flyer are few and far between. Then you’ve got another problem if your event is a one off or your season hasn’t started yet, because they’re simply won’t be any accurate photos yet! You could ask some of your players or your participants to have a photo done in their kit, of course, but not everyone is happy with having their face on flyers all over town and on the internet…
So how do you find an attractive visual motif to create sporting flyers?
We’ve gone searching for good sports flyer templates to help you get that lightning strike of inspiration. You’ll find that many of the flyers or posters operate with either cut-out photos or graphical representations of key pieces of kit or equipment: look at the American football and rugby balls, for example, or the helmets and gloves used for American football games and boxing matches respectively. They’re always a great choice because they’re universally recognisable but have no connection to one specific game or person. The most eye-catching one if you ask us is the flaming badminton shuttlecock!
Another idea to explore is cartoon-style drawing: this works will with sports in which players wear strong colours or use iconic items of equipment. A step further is to take team mascots if you’re, say, advertising an American football or ice-hockey match, and go for graphical representations of them. Mascots are often animals, and so also have an instant recognition factor.
And if you are going to show people, don’t forget to do what all sports flyers do: use photos with awesome lighting from behind and/or above the figure. This lends them gravitas and makes their muscular frames look even more steeled. Just ask the boxers in the examples below…
