The name is simple enough, but the London Design Festival is actually kind of A Big Deal. It’s been going for 12 years now, and just seems to grow each time. In 2014, there are over 300 scheduled events spread over eight days between 13th and 21st September, and for the sixth year running, the world-famous Victoria and Albert Museum will be acting as a creative hub for the festival. As far as design in London goes, it’s kind of hard to beat.
Before the London Design Festival (LDF for short), there were the major trade shows around which it grew up. This year will see 100% Design, Decorex International, designjunction, Focus/14 and Tent London & Super Brands London all taking place between in the eight-day period of the LDF, so there really is something for every conceivable kind of designer and manufacturer, in pretty much every part of town: 2014 will see six “Design Districts” brought to life by exhibitions, talks, and parties – Brompton, Chelsea, Clerkenwell, Islington, Queens Park and Shoreditch.
And just to make sure that the middle of town doesn’t go home empty-handed, there’s going to be a major landmark project in no other location than Trafalgar Square. This year, LDF is working with Airbnb to put four “homes” around the plinths and fountains of Nelson’s Column as a reference to how Airbnb provides travellers with homes from homes around the globe. Each home will represent a different kind of accommodation available on the peer-to-peer site, from chic urban lofts to artist’s garden retreats. It’s a huge clever idea and we can’t wait to see what the temporary installations in this, the very centre of London, will look like.
Having said that, we’re also quite excited about another cooperation between LDF and the world of business. If, for example, you download or buy the 2014 guide and map (and, with those 300 events spread out all over the capital over an entire week, you’d be well advised to invest in it…), you’ll see a range of beautiful adverts spread in between listings. And if you scroll or turn to page 71, you might just come across a company you know well…
Yes: we at SAXOPRINT are also sponsoring the London Design Festival 2014! With so many of our clients working in the creative and marketing industry and coming to us with very demanding designs for print, this event was one that we really wanted to show our support for. So enjoy the festival, and look out for us in the guide, on the website, and a range of other London Design Festival materials.
