Ladies and Gentlemen, today we are crossing the pond in our featured series. Please meet Juanita Andrea Juárez, an ambitious young lady born and raised on a ranch in Laredo, Texas with her two younger siblings. She eventually moved to California to attend Santa Clara University. After graduating, she decided to stay in the Bay Area and landed her first job out of college at a small sign shop in Sunnyvale. She has since begun working in Santa Clara at Pelican Signs as a Graphic Designer, Production Artist and Installer. In her free time, she does freelance graphic design work and enjoys other activities, like playing the guitar and playing indoor soccer.
Claudia: You are an expert in creating striking designs and artworks with strong and clear message, aren’t you? How come and how would you describe your style in detail?
Andrea:As I state in my artist statement: My work is characterized by simplicity, and directness. I strive to create an object with presence, something that can be seen from a distance yet still appreciated at face value.
Claudia: You are doing logo, print and web design, right? What do you like most and why?
Andrea:Creating logos is most satisfying for me. I get to combine all the elements, symbols and colors to form the representative identity of a company. I’m not restricted by any preconceived ideas or guidelines, I can be free to hear the client’s desires and turn it into a 2-D image. It’s exciting to make your ideas a reality.
Claudia: What goals do you set yourself for each artwork you create and where do you get inspiration?
Andrea:As a designer, I pride myself in being able to turn a client’s idea into a memorable piece, no matter how big or small the image. As a general guideline, I strive to please my clients and provide clear, striking images that deliver a message. I find that there is inspiration all around me. Pretty much everything you see has some sort of imagery or design to it, whether it be ads, newspapers, wallpaper, instructions or even the logo on your television set. I try and absorb different designs to see what works or doesn’t work for certain clients or requests.
Claudia: What is your favourite colour to use in your design and is that maybe something like an identifying feature for you?
Andrea:I don’t actually have a favorite color to design with. As I become a more experienced designer, I may find that I do gravitate to a certain palette of colors, but I can’t actually think of a favorite color I design with.
Claudia: What is your philosophy in life or favourite quote?
Andrea:One of my favorite quotes is
“be true to your work, your word and your friend” by Henry David Thoreau.
It’s also telling of my philosophy in life. I think the quote pretty much says it all.
Claudia: Any closing words of wisdom you wanna share with the world?
Andrea:I just want to close with some words of wisdom from my Grandmother,
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”
Every morning, I have a bowl of oatmeal and blueberries except on the weekends when I cook bacon and eggs.
