Ladies and Gentlemen, please meet a fabulous artist from overseas: Mr. Daniel Maldonado. No more words needed here as he introduces himself. Enjoy reading and getting to know an interesting and passionate personality.
Daniel: Hello, world! My name is Daniel Maldonado and I am a web and graphic designer from Austin, Texas USA. I have a wonderful fiance and two sons. I currently hold the title of Textile Prepress Artist at BuildASign.com where I prepare, and create files for our digital and silkscreen apparel printing.
I also enjoy spending my free time making websites and creating other forms or art. When I am not being artsy, I am spending time with my family. Tons of time outside. My sons love playing baseball and riding bikes. My sons and family are the greatest.
Claudia: When having a look at your web page or behance it appears you are working in the creative field for a pretty long time now. Please tell us a bit about that progress and let us know at what stage of your creative life you see yourself.
Daniel: Honestly, I feel that my career has started all over again.
It all started for me designing lp art and flyers when I was in a punk rock band back in 2002. That progressed while touring the US and gained a reputation. Eventually I started silkscreen printing my own bands t-shirts out of my bedroom which turned into printing other bands merchandise. I did that for about 7-8 years.
All that rolled right into your more acceptable 9-5 gig. No more burning screens at midnight, or printing in my underwear! While I still dabbled in art in general, I became more focused on my day job, and starting learning development in my spare time. Leveling out my work/life balance…
So, the last two years I have spent going to school and teaching myself front end development, in addition to, designing more specifically for the web. I still get returning clients for print and branding, but my focus has definitely shifted to web design and development. That is why I feel like I am starting all over again; learning, learning, learning. But it’s been something that I connect with, I understand, makes sense, and I so now is the time to pursue it in my spare time.
Claudia: What was the greatest success you were able to accomplish so far with your work?
Daniel: To many! One of my favorite moments would be painting a wall mural with tattoo artist Thomas Hooper in Austin, Tx. It’s great to do something and collaborate with those that you admire.
I am very humble and feel very thankful for all the things I’ve been able to do and those I’ve been able to contribute my art too. So anything that is on my portfolio or Behance profile now, makes me feel very accomplished. Totally!
Claudia: Your designs seem pretty clean with a vintage touch. How would you describe your style and do you maybe have an identifying feature?
Daniel: Totally! My favorite color is #272727. I’ve always had this really textured style which has calmed down over the years. I’d like to think that I can now control it better and give feeling, or an expression to what I create now. That, versus, just making a cool looking textured piece of art, right?
Regardless of web or print, the darker, textured style defines me. Meanwhile, a very clean, useful, and usable design is my end goal. It’s important for me to create something that is passionate to me, looks and feels like me – but also works well and will get my clients points across effectively and immediately.
Claudia: What inspires you for your work and what is your favourite product or object to be designed?
Daniel: Everything! I love the art of tattooing. I love the art of silk screen printing. Creating things with your hands. Knife making! These true forms of creativity are what inspire me. My sons, my fiance, they inspire me to be great. I want my children to grow up knowing that they can do whatever it is they want – and know that their daddy is the living proof.
As far as products, I geek over Apple products. Go figure… I enjoy art books, sketch books, and Japanese drawings. They’re all forms of inspiration.
Products that I enjoy to design? With out a doubt be responsive web design. Both the design and development. Love it!
Claudia: What is your favourite font?
Daniel: Good one! Proxima Nova? Simply, I really love the light weights and its such a powerful typeface to me. I also have a thing for italic serifs…

Claudia: What is your philosophy in life or favourite quote?
“Do the right thing!”
It is what I live for, stand for and is often said in my household. I want my kids growing up to do the right thing. Do what you want, but do it right!
Claudia: Any closing words of wisdom you wanna share with the world?
Daniel: Do the right thing! & Keep on, keepin’ on. I am living proof that I love what I do, do what I like to do, and gotta work hard to get it done. Keep learning, keep doing.
