The craziness of Christmas shopping has started for most of us. At least in our minds! If you are anything like me, the thought of making the best-wrapped gifts under the tree is an exciting challenge. To make sure you don’t mix the gifts up, it is always good to label them… and why not use a matching gift tag with a customisable message? Best of all, you easily can make your self. In this tutorial you will learn how you can transform our practical business cards to beautiful Christmas Gift Tag Templates. All that is needed is InDesign and your creativity.
Step 1
Start by downloading the free template, size 55x85mm, portrait format, for InDesign. You find it under ‘special formats’.
Step 2
Draw a rectangle with the ‘Rectangle tool’ across the page, all the way to the bleed mark. Make it red.
Step 3
Use the ‘Pen tool’ and draw a Christmas tree that is 3.5×3.5mm.
Step 4
Duplicate the tree three times and place them in a pattern like this.
Step 5
Go to ‘Edit>Step and Repeat’. Make sure that ‘Create as a grid’ is ticked. Then make 12 rows, 16 columns that are offset 7.5mm.
Step 6
While all the trees are selected, group them by right clicking and choosing ‘Group’. Open the ‘Swatches Panel’ and make them all the same red as the background. Set it to tint: 80.
Step 7
Open the ‘Layers panel’ and click the lock for the layer you have worked in so far. Create a new layer. Draw a circle with the ‘Ellipse Tool’ that is 5.25×5.25mm.
Step 8
Duplicate it and place them in a circle. To make it easier you can draw a large circle that you place the circles along the edge of.
Step 9
Draw one large circle on top of the other circles. Select all the circles. Open the ‘Paths Panel’ and click ‘Add’ under ‘Pathfinder’.
Step 10
Make your new flower shape an off-white with a green border.
Step 11
Duplicate the flower and make it slightly smaller and place it on top of the other one. Make this flower red.
Step 12
Duplicate the flower again and make it just slightly smaller than the one below. Make this one red with an off-white border.
Step 13
Draw two off-white circles with the ‘Ellipse Tool’. Open the ‘Stroke Panel’ and choose ‘Japanese Dots’ 3pt for the inner circle.
Step 14
Duplicate your bottom flower, make it smaller and place it in the middle. With the ‘Text Tool’, write ‘Merry Christmas’ centred in the middle.
Step 15
To create a hanger, draw a circle like below and make it off-white with a green border.
Step 16
Draw one more circle on top and make it green.
Step 17
Place the two circles under the ornament. Draw a smaller circle and make a line like below.
Step 18
Select the bottom flower shape, right click and choose ‘Effect>Drop Shadow’. Use opacity: 58%, distance: 1mm and size: 1.764mm.
Step 19
Draw a rectangle in the bottom of the page with the ‘Rectangle Tool’. Make it white. Right click and choose ‘Effects>Transparency’ and set it to 60%.
Step 20
With the ‘Text Tool’ write ‘To:’ and ‘From:’. Optionally you can make one more textbox and add your website address to your christmas gift tag template.
